You arrived in Leuven and you found your room or studio, duely called ‘kot’ here. If your kot is furnished, you will most probably not have a lot more at your disposal than a simple desk, a bed and a shabby bookcase. Of course, you could head to the nearest IKEA to get some nice gear to cheer up your room. Or… you could take a look at SPIT, the shop specialized in recycled goods, in Heverlee. Reuse: it feels good in your wallet and it is good for the environment.

SPIT is one of the 80 ‘kringloopwinkels’ (shops specialized in recycled good) all over Flanders. When people bring in or SPIT’s Collecting Center picked up, for free, furniture, clothes, books, cd’s, hifi equipment, etc. they do not need any longer and are still in good shape, SPIT checks, sorts and ultimately puts them up for sale. House hold equipment is checked, cleaned and certified with six month of warrantee. You would like a nice, working, tv? You need more cutlery because no one has done the dishes in months? SPIT is the place to be.

Of course, what about the prizes, you might rightfully ask. Here are a few examples: an entire dining room, with table, chair and buffet for a mere 60 EUR, a two-person settee for 5 EUR, a confy one-person sofa for 1 EUR, a nice table that can be used as a second desk for 10 EUR, a whole collection of beer glasses at 0.10 EUR each or a complete china service for under 5 EUR,… Though cheap, IKEA cannot beat that. Admittedly, the cheapest things you will find seem to come right out of your grandparents living room. But not always so. And what’s more, if you are somewhat creative, you can make old-fashioned stuff look like, useable, modern furniture.

The same goes for the clothes. If you are not to much of a fashion junky, you can find some nice gear. Or clothes that can get dirty, for if you work in the garden of repaint your place. And if you are the creative kind, you can make your very own Project Runway and fix things up into an ensemble that might come right of the catwalk in Paris or Milan. The latter might be a slight exaggeration, but the prizes are indiscussibly low.

As SPIT sells second hand stuff, you might find that you just acquired a nice coffe table that later turns out to have previously pertained to, let’s say, your newly found friends in Leuven or your neighbor. This kind of things really happen.

Another good reason to shop at SPIT, wether you like second hand sales or not, is that it undiscussably reduces the mountain of waste. In this consumer society, alternative ways of consumption are not superfluous. So before you hop on bus 358 or 352 for an hour taking trip towards IKEA Zaventem, grab your bike and ride to the Ijzermolenstraat 10-12 in Heverlee, just outside the ring around Leuven. We are confident that you might find something you might like. Check it out regularly, as the offers change constantly. The details on where to find SPIT are on the advertisement on page 13 in The Voice – SPIT is a faithfull advertiser for The Voice and Veto for years now, but no worries, this article is truthful –, or at spit.be. |
