SHEMET 2011 In Leuven: Advances in Sheet Metal Industry

The 14th International Conference on Sheet Metal (SHEMET) was organized in Leuven from 18th – 20th April 2011. The conference, which is organized every two years, is the result of a consortium of five universities, viz.: University of Ulster, Birmingham City University, Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, L'Università degli Studi di Palermo and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. This year, the conference was hosted by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the university, after a gap of 10 years.

"Good news!" exclaimed one international graduate student, after Flemish newspapers reported K.U.Leuven's seventh place ranking among European universities. German independent think tank Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) conducted the study, which is one of the most influential regional rankings. University rankings not only matter to some students in school selection, they can also make a difference even after enrollment and graduation, in terms of pride and employment opportunities.

Looking at the number of Belgian student attending this conference, having a US experience to mean a great deal to them. This experience can be obtained by a study, research or internship. The American Ambassy and Ambassy of Belgium and the Fulbright Commission for Educational Exchange between the USA and Belgium and Luxembourg presented each of these possibilities.

Internationalisation is a hot topic right now for the K. U. Leuven. The Student Council (LOKO) is certainly concerned about it; it was the topic of their speech at the opening of the academic year. Some are worried that if the K.U.Leuven does not become a truly international university, it risks being left behind in parochial obscurity.
