Europe’s Brightest
AN INSIDE VIEW ON THE 7TH BRIGHT CONFERENCE
“One thing about the Bright conference is that you wouldn’t believe the amount of horrible puns we make. I’ve heard them all and then some,” jokes Anneleen Hannes, student of languages at the K.U.Leuven. We’ll throw in one for the road anyway: while the ominous ashes of the Eyjafjallajökull threaten to cast a cloud over the conference, its brightness still shines through.
Sharing Knowledge and Gaining So Much in Return
Some of you might have already heard about something called “Sharing Knowledge Project.” The announcement online tells us that the project “offers international students or researchers at K.U.Leuven, who are from developing countries, the possibility to share their wealth of personal, intercultural and/or academic knowledge with Flemish students.” I’ve been taking part in this initiative since I began my PhD studies and I can confidently say that it delivers on its promise of a fruitful exchange of knowledge and diverse points of view.

INTERVIEW WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS OF HISTORY ASSOCIATION
This interview began in Helsinki, continued in Suomenlinna and was finished in Leuven. Frerik Kampman, a history and Arabic studies student from the University of Utrecht, is also President of ISHA this year. And that means a lot of travelling around. Frerik does not mind at all.
“Questions about how concerns and complaints regarding exams and professors are dealt with”
When I was still a new student in Leuven, I was quite happy to learn that there was a way to voice out concerns about the requirements and exams and/or complain about an unfair professor. If and when there is a problem, one can have recourse to the ombudsperson. But then I have heard some exam horror stories that seem to show that the ombudsman is not always reliable and/or that some student concerns are not always properly addressed.
Voicemail: Reaction from the Institute of Philosophy
Dear Ms Broeksteeg,
I have just read your article in The Voice. The overall tenor of the article is wrong. The article is unfair since there has never been any cover-up operation.
