‘The Best of…’, ‘the greatest hits’ or even ‘the very best of…’ sooner or later, every artist who is successfully involved in the music business for some time brings out a compilation-cd. Alanis Morissette is no exception with ‘The Collection’, a disc featuring 18 of her –as it says on the cover- ‘most recognizable hits’.

The combination of a strong voice –that undoubtfully belongs to a strong personality- and self conscious yet well-written and personal lyrics makes Alanis Morisette rock the world since her breakthrough in 1995. Her raw yet tender voice is suitable for both rocky songs with balls (‘Are you thinking of me when you fuck her?’) and moving ballads (`I see you ignoring your children/And I love you still’). Not only does this disk contain all off Alanis’ big hits - Thank You, Crazy, You Oughta Know, Ironic, Uninvited, Hands Clean, a.o. - it also features some precious little pearls, unknown to all the ones who like her music, but just are not so much into her. An example of such a song is the funny and easy-going Cole Porter song ‘Let’s Do It, Lets Fall In Love’ that she recorded for the movie ‘De-Lovely’, that sets Porter’s life in motion picture. Another unknown beauty is ‘Mercy’, based on a Hungarian song translated into English by Alanis. In the leaflet (that contains every lyric) Alanis addresses the reader with a personal note on the songs, saying that picking songs for this collection was ‘a torturous thing to do’.

In spite of this, we think Alanis Morissette did a great job, not only as a singer and songwriter, but also by bringing out this album providing us this ‘great overview’ or ‘snapshot of the last many years’ as she calls it herself. |
