Moby at Vorst Nationaal
On November 11, 2009, Moby performed at Forest Vorst Nationaal as a part of a tour in support of his new album “Wait for me” released in June 2009. Starting with a short warm-up from Kelly Scarr, the live performance by Moby was something that can hardly be expressed in words.
I will never regret coming to Belgium, not least for the chance to attend a performance by Moby, one of the most talented musicians of our time. While this review may sound too subjective as to be critical, it is my opinion that this man has managed to establish his own unique style of music. His latest album “Wait for me” was no exception to this trend. The high quality music contained in this ninth studio album represents the result of hard work and innovation.
One would have had to be at the concert to feel that unforgettable feeling caused by standing in the center of an arena with a capacity for 8,000 people and singing in unison “I never meant to hurt you, I never meant to lie, so this is goodbye” 8,000 voices strong, hands in the air. The show included singles from one of his most famous albums ‘Play’ with such hits as ‘Porcelain’, ‘Natural Blues’, ‘Why does my heart feel so bad’ and many more, representing the so-called ‘classic tracks’. Impressions from the new songs of Moby reflect his own vision: “Something very personal, very melodic, very beautiful”. It is a mixture of pop-dance, electronic and techno music with tones of ambience and chill-out.
A separate review could be given for the animated videos accompanying the songs. It was the first album produced by Moby under his own label “Little idiot”, and the videos were inspired and made by David Lynch.
Returning to Moby’s Brussels performance: The guy had fun on stage and provided a two and a half-hour long opportunity for his audience to have fun as well. He doesn’t try too hard to prove himself as a perfect singer, even though he is actually, although there are many things that he does better. Members of his group performed many of his songs on the stage. For me their names remained unknown, but the cover versions of “classic tracks” of Moby that these girls presented from the stage were really worth hearing.
Moby’s performance, in addition to being entertaining, helps us to understand his personality. He is very positive and dedicated to what he is doing on the stage. He seems to be very open to the public, repeating “Thank you, thank you, thank you” after each song. The whole performance fills everybody around with such a positive energy that even his “Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye” leaves one not with sadness that the show is over, but rather with a hope to see it again soon.
Coming performance of this kind that will take place in Belgium include: Placebo, Marilyn Manson, Tokio Hotel and others. Tickets are available and can be purchased online on the official websites of Belgium’s largest arenas: Forest Vorst Nationaal in Brussels and Lotto Arena in Antwerpen. |
